Our face and entire body is covered with tiny openings or pores. Each of these pores holds a tiny hair (follicle). Sebaceous glands are located at the bottom of each follicle and these glands produce an oily substance called sebum. When this sebum gets trapped, a thin layer is formed which plugs the follicles. Bacteria multiply in the follicle leading to infection or lesions. These lesions can appear as small white or dark pimples called whiteheads or blackheads, or hard-reddish inflammation called acne.
The main cause of body acne is stress and hormonal changes. Unhealthy diet habits can also be a cause. Other factors attributing to the formation of these are tight-fitting clothes, heavy perspiration, regular use of glossy makeup, usage of astringent products or steroid drugs, and genetic causes.
Body acne is most prevalent among teens and adults. They appear mostly on the chest, neck, backs and shoulders. Compared to facial acne, body acne is just too hard to get rid off. They are deep rooted in the thick skin of the body and constant rubbing with the clothes makes them more difficult to cure.
