Causes of Acne Scars
1. As with all types of scarring, acne scaring is caused by the damage in the tissue. When tissue is damaged, body produces collagen and sends it to the damaged area. Sometimes body produces excessive collagen. The disproportionate collagen builds into a fibrous mass that ends up becoming an acne blemish with an uneven shape.
2. As with all scars, the most common reason for acne scar is the loss of tissue. Many types of acne scars are the results of this cause. The well-known ‘ice-pick’ scar, depressed scars, soft scars, atrophic macules to name major ones.

Types of Acne Scars and their Treatments
In July 2001 Jacob et al proposed a categorization system for acne scars according to which acne scars are classified as:

Icepick
Narrower than 2mm and extended into the deep dermis layer, icepick scars make the skin looks like it has been punctured with an icepick. They can be corrected with resurfacing or dermabrasion

Rolling
The skin appears to be rolled in this type of acne scars. Breaking up the subcutaneous fibrous bands is the only treatment.

Boxcar
Shallow boxcar scars are 0.1-0.5mm in depth, which can be treated with conventional skin resurfacing methods, and deep boxcar scars are 0.5mm in depth, which require full-thickness treatment. Both shallow and deep boxcar scars are round to oval with sharp vertical edges.
